Luckily, when New Yorkers need a dose of nature or a temporary backyard, there are plenty of nearby destinations just a few hours drive away, from the Hamptons and the Catskills to out-of-state spots like Philadelphia, the Berkshires, and Westerly, Rhode Island.
To help narrow down the options, we rounded up 27 of the best Airbnbs within three hours of the city for easy weekend getaways or drivable summer vacations, whether you want to be close to the beach, in the mountains, or need enough room for the whole family to join.

Woodstock, New York
With a view like this, would you ever get out of bed? Maybe, if only to explore this Airbnb's gardens, which comprise sprawling lawns, a private waterfall, and 100-year-old cedar trees. Inside, the three-bedroom artist's studio is teeming with cool finds, from a vintage piano to intricate chandeliers, plus plenty of creature comforts. Relax in the soaking tub overlooking the pond, cook a meal in the fully-equipped kitchen, or read a book on a sun lounger out back. At night, gather around the fire pit for even more fresh air.

Block Island, Rhode Island
Panoramic ocean views are a hard first impression to beat. Lofty pane windows bring the outdoors inside this newly constructed, ultra-modern two-bedroom home that sits atop the Mohegan bluffs. The 270-degree view of the Atlantic Ocean means you don’t have to choose between catching the sunset or sunrise—you get both. Don’t box it into the typical beach house category; rather than pastels and marine life imagery, visitors are treated to a tranquil, spa-like space. The bathroom has a deep tub sculpted into a prism of slate. Up top, things are fresh and cutting edge with a grassy green roof. Even the outdoor showers look like modern art.

Fire Island Pines, New York
The focal point of this special pyramidal home is the glass wall, which looks out to the ocean and fills the living room with sweeping sky and sand dune views. (Wake up early for coffee and a sunrise show.) With a ceiling that reaches 25 feet tall at its tallest point, you won't feel boxed in. Plus, this architectural marvel comes with beach access and a pool. The pool deck gives this property private hotel vibes and is outfitted with matching teal sun loungers and umbrellas, a refrigerator, and an outdoor dining area. Inside, the three-bedroom home sleeps six. If Fire Island is on your itinerary, please note that it’s only accessible by boat—pack your bags accordingly.

West Shokan, New York
The Catskills are one of the first places that come to mind for a weekend away, and this cabin is just what we want to stay in. The airy, light-filled home has plenty of windows, sliding doors, and skylights looking out to the trees, plus a fireplace and a big backyard complete with seating and a grill. Another nice touch, especially for winter visits, is the heated floor in the master bathroom. Each of the two bedrooms has a queen bed, and while the decor is similar in each, one has its own set of doors leading out to the yard.
Tannersville, New York
Located in Tannersville, New York, two hours north of New York City in the heart of the Catskills, the Hunter Greenhouse is a 1971 flat roof A-frame with three bedrooms and two baths. Lush with plants and decked out in warm woods and soft fabrics, the place is an Instagrammer’s dream. Winter visitors to Tannersville can fit in a day of skiing at Hunter Mountain or Windham Mountain, sample a seasonal tasting menu by a Michelin-starred chef at Deer Mountain Inn, or browse the goods at local gift shop Clove & Creek. During warmer months, enjoy an afternoon of hiking followed by dinner on the back porch.
Pocono Lake, Pennsylvania
This cedar chalet is the kind of place that’s made for fun times with a group of friends or family. Yes, it has a hot tub. (And a fire pit!) The 2,300 square-foot lodge feels fresh and new, thanks to a November 2019 renovation, and sleeps up to 10 across five bedrooms, with three full bathrooms. Netflix and other streaming services, plus plenty of parking, provide creature comforts. It offers lake access, too—three lakes belong to Locust Lake Village, the private community where the house is located.
Saugerties, New York
This five-bedroom with mountain views is set upon 16 natural, untamed acres of land, and sits about two hours north of New York City. The hot tub and hammocks raise the leisure levels starry-sky high here, and each bedroom is unique. One has heated floors, another boasts a tall brick fireplace, while a third showcases stunning stained-glass artwork. A special feature of this Airbnb is that it comes with a separate studio, in a building set apart from the main house, that has a queen-size bed. The studio is included for reservations of 11 or more guests.
Kingston, New York
In the 19th century, this spacious abode in upstate New York was a schoolhouse. The 2,000-square-foot converted home has two bedrooms and two full baths—but bring the whole gang because there’s also a bonus one-bedroom cottage steps from the main house on the property. These days, this place is all fun, no studying: it has a saltwater pool, claw-foot tub, and every streaming service you can imagine. Plus, central AC and heating to keep guests comfortable year round. While it would be easy to spend your whole trip in, don’t go without exploring all that Kingston and its neighboring Hudson Valley towns have to offer.

Water Mill, New York
One of our favorite Airbnbs with pools, this Hamptons home has room for the extended family. It sleeps 10 guests across five bedrooms, and has a huge backyard with a large stone patio (which has replaced the wooden deck pictured above), plenty of grassy areas, and an oversized pool. Inside, you'll find farmhouse-style exposed wood beams, white shiplap walls, and Dutch-style doors. Plus, there's lots of communal space, with three living rooms, including one sun room with wraparound views of the woodsy surroundings.
Westerly, Rhode Island
Nestled between the ocean, forest, and a family farm, this Rhode Island home is one of the farthest from New York City on the list, but well worth the drive. During the summer, bikes and surfboards are available upon request, and there is a large yard to relax in (hammock and outdoor shower included). Artwork made by the host and his family can be found throughout the house, as well as plants in most of the sun-filled rooms. Four can fit comfortably in the two-bedroom home, with room for another on the sofa bed.
West Stockbridge, Massachusetts
From the pale pink parlor to the sunshine yellow front doors and quirky sunroom artwork, this 1850s home has something eye-catching around every corner. It also sleeps 12 across six bedrooms (including two king beds), so don't let the price tag shock you. Located in the Berkshires, it sits on an acre of land, but is also just a short walk from the shops and restaurants in West Stockbridge. It also has all the amenities you could want: a washer/dryer, fully-equipped kitchen, heating, and Wi-Fi. There's no central AC, but there is a portable unit for common spaces and fans throughout the house.

Rhinebeck, New York
Is it a Cubist painting? Is it a space shuttle? Actually, it’s your Airbnb. Staying in an architectural jewel is a form of travel in its own right—and that's certainly the case when it comes to this Hudson Valley home. Upon stepping into the Picasso–esque structure, you are immersed in blond woods and harmonic geometry. The open-plan house can sleep up to three, and is a sustainable space, heated geothermally rather than with fossil fuels and electrically powered by the sun. Internationally-recognized Steven Holl Architects conceived this one-of-a-kind design, with the philosophy of shaping space and light with purpose and responsibility to the environment. The house is in the town of Rhinebeck, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from the city, and offers art galleries, museums, independent films, historic homes, hiking, and biking.

Stamford, New York
We’re suckers for a good A-frame, and this list wouldn’t be complete without one to consider. This renovated Catskills refuge sits on six acres of land fringed with towering conifers and maples. The foliage explodes in a colorful show of red, gold, and green as the seasons change. Enjoy the view from the deck, which is furnished with cushioned chairs and a dining area, as well as equipped with a grill. The two-bedroom home is ideal for a small group or family as it sleeps four. While the outdoor views are hard to pull away from, leave time to cozy up by the fireplace indoors, too.

Poughkeepsie, New York
You’ll find this well-decorated three-bedroom cottage in Poughkeepsie, a two-hour trip from New York City via car or the Metro North’s Hudson line. The house and its gardens are situated beside Wappinger Creek, and rabbits, foxes, and birds abound. Inside, bright white walls, sunny windows, and colorful Scandinavian-inspired decor make things cheerful. Even better: There are bunk beds, which make it a great pick for a family (or a group with older children at heart).

Mount Tremper, New York
It's hard to decide which season we'd like to stay here most—in the summer and fall, you can take advantage of hiking in the Catskills and spend time on the large wooden deck or in the screened-in porch; in the winter, you can play in the snow, then cozy up to the fireplace under wool blankets with coffee from the kitchen's Chemex. The cabin has two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with a double, one bathroom, and a fully-stocked kitchen. Plus, it's a five-minute drive from Phoenicia Diner.

Fire Island, New York
A thin barrier island just south of Long Island, Fire Island has long been a haven for the LGBTQ+ community, and has gained attention of late thanks to this summer's romantic comedy of the same name. With almost no cars allowed on the island (you'll have to arrive by ferry), there's a magical quality to the location that feels far removed from the city. From this Airbnb's deck, you can look out at the Atlantic Ocean, with a grill and deck chairs at your disposal. The house itself has room for six across two bedrooms, though it's best for family or close groups of friends, as the rooms each have one double bed and one twin bed. Walk or bike (a few are provided) to nearby restaurants, cafes, and shops, or stroll down the private walkway to the beach.

Cape May, New Jersey
The inside of this New Jersey home looks straight out of a Joanna Gaines mood board, with a beach-themed trundle bed room for the kids, a room with a double bed, and a master bedroom with a queen-size bed and en-suite bathroom. There's also a cozy living space centered around the fireplace. The outside, though, is what really drew us in, with plenty of seating (beach chairs, loungers, a dining table), toys and cornhole, and a grill. You'll have access to a private beach, where you just might spot schools of dolphins, the host says. Bonus: This is an Airbnb Plus, so the home has been vetted by an Airbnb rep and has all the basics, including an an ironing board, closet and drawer space for guests, a well-lit entry, easy check-in, toiletries like shampoo, and a bathroom free of the host's personal items.

Catskill, New York
This thoughtfully designed, plant-filled home in Catskill, New York, has two bedrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Hosts Daniel and Kevin are an architect-designer duo—one peek at the art, and that will come as no surprise. Every corner has something interesting to look at, but at no point does the home feel cluttered. This property has an interesting history, too: It was originally part of a girls' summer camp that ran from the 1920s through the 1960s. Daniel and Kevin now own several of the original camp buildings and cabins. There's a grill in the backyard should you want to barbecue, and a fireplace in the living room.
Warwick, New York
Warwick is just over an hour from New York City, located in the lower Hudson Valley. It’s known for wineries, orchards, and a drive-in movie theater. This artsy loft fits right into the peaceful town—the stylishly appointed one-bedroom will get your creative juices flowing, with colorful woven carpets and clean white walls that are like blank pages for your imagination to play on. The lofted bed, accessed via a ladder, and wood-beam ceilings add serious coziness. This is our top pick for a fall stay.

Philipstown, New York
Just an hour north of New York City, this three-bedroom, two-bath home is in walking distance of Bear Mountain, with picturesque views of the Hudson River from the living room. It's close to plenty of upstate attractions—Storm King, Cold Spring, and Beacon included—with hiking, fishing, swimming, and kayaking to be done right from the backyard. All three bedrooms are on the second floor (one has two bunk beds, another a queen, and the third a king); downstairs, there's a large living space, kitchen, and dining room, plus a washer/dryer and fireplace.

Shelter Island, New York
At the eastern end of Long Island, only accessible by ferry, is the four-by-five-mile gem called Shelter Island. This three-bedroom, two-story home sits on the north side, an easy walk away from a handful of shops, cafes, and restaurants (and, key for New Yorkers without cars, a short walk from the ferry). Past guests note the home's comfortable outdoor seating areas, perfect for relaxing summer evenings by the grill, the beautiful decor and mix of vintage furnishings, and the prime location.

Lee, Massachusetts
We’ve given upstate New York and Long Island a lot of love, but let’s not overlook the Berkshires. This getaway is in Lee, Massachusetts, minutes from acclaimed cultural events Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, and the Tanglewood music venue (summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra). Kripalu yoga retreat and Canyon Ranch are nearby, too. Of course, hiking and biking are popular local activities, and the house comes with two bicycles for guests to use during their stay. The stylish two-bedroom sleeps eight thanks to two Murphy beds in the loft. End your day with a drink on the screened-in back porch or s’mores by the fire pit.

South Kortright, New York
One of our favorite Airbnbs for a romantic cabin getaway, this two-bedroom cabin in the Catskills is three hours north of the city. It is run by the same host as Traveler editor Betsy Blumenthal's favorite upstate retreat, who recommends visiting nearby spots like a family-owned dairy farm, local butcher shop, and home goods store. Also close by: Hiking and biking trails and horseback riding. Of course, you could just post up inside the airy, bright home, with its floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto the valley, wood-burning stove, farmhouse table, and bed clad in Muji sheets.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
The guest apartment of this Philly row house is all clean lines, white walls, and fluffy duvets, with just enough decoration to make it feel lived in, while still being as far from cluttered as you can get. It shares a yard with the home owners, who are readily available to help with anything you may need, and is an Airbnb Plus, so it has passed a tough 100-point inspection. The unit is three stories, with the bathroom on the third floor, so it may not be suitable for guests with mobility concerns.

Otis, Massachusetts
This Berkshires treehouse is a favorite of ours in fall—with its floor-to-ceiling windows, the foliage is on display round the clock. While there are two beds (the daybed above and a queen bed) and two bathrooms, we think it's a good spot for couples. Cozy up around the living room's wood-burning fireplace, cook meals in the fully-equipped kitchen, and spend time outdoors on the spacious deck. The property sits on seven acres of land, so you'll have plenty of privacy, with nearby access to hiking and skiing and the town of Great Barrington 20 minutes away.

Greenport, New York
We’ll sing the praises of Long Island’s North Fork any day of the week. Greenport is a waterfront fishing village where you’ll find harbors and vineyards; shingled saltbox and Victorian homes; vintage furniture and farm stands. This particular house is historic—it was originally built in the 1800s—and has been restored for modern living. It embodies all of the town’s charm and has golden, weathered shingles, a front door and shutters painted deep turquoise, window boxes full of flowers, and a weather vein to top it all off. The private backyard boasts a deck, grill, and fire pit. The open concept two-bedroom house sleeps up to five right in the heart of the village. For your beach day, we recommend The 67 Steps Beach—descend them to discover boulder-strewn sand.
Sag Harbor, New York
Mid-century modern stylishness, a light-filled open floor plan, and a Scandinavian sauna earn this Sag Harbor Historic District home accolades. The backyard houses a 60-foot gunite pool, open during the warmer months, starting in May. Inside, find three bedrooms and one-and-a-half baths. The location is ideal too, close to both downtown and the beach.
